The Weimaraner is easily identified by his smooth, silky grey coat and amber eyes. He was recognized by the AKC in 1943, However, the wirehaired version is not AKC-recognized but is fairly common in Germany. America’s Weimaraner is used as a game tracker and retriever. He’s also a very social dog who wants to be with his family. Left alone too long and too often, he may become a nuisance barker or escape artist who’s learned how to open your back gate!

In temperament, the Weimaraner is alert, obedience and fearless. Bold and rowdy, his high energy level is sometimes overwhelming with small children; he’s wary of strangers, other pets and other dogs. He’s a superb watchdog and can be very protective of his family. Moderately affectionate, the Weimaraner can sometimes appear aloof, especially with his elegant, regal good looks. With his stubborn streak, he can be difficult to housetrain and needs a patient owner who sets firm limits upon his behavior. Socialization and obedience training should begin as a puppy.

This dog has an extremely high energy level and isn’t suitable for apartment or city dwelling unless his owner is dedicated to spending daily strenuous exercise with him. With a big yard and tall fence that he can’t jump over and a daily hour-long game of fly-ball, he’ll divide his time between rambunctious playtime and calm companionship at home. His only primary health concerns are hip dysplasia and gastric tortion, and he doesn’t require a great deal of grooming except a quick brush once a week to make his coat gleam.

The Weimaraner’s quick wit allows him to be easily trained to improve his instinctive hunting skills. He does very well in basic and advanced obedience training, and is frequently seen taking top honors at agility trials. His aristocratic looks belie his talents in the field, the agility course, and the show ring. His striking appearance, hardy conformation, and versatility has made him one of the most popular AKC-recognized dogs in America.
