This popular sporting dog is different in many ways from the AKC Pointer and its cousin, the German Wirehaired Pointer. This dog is amazingly adept at pointing, retrieving, trailing and game-killing, unlike the Pointer, who is not as versatile…

German Shorthaired Pointer In Snow
The German Shorthaired Pointer originated in the 1700′s during Germany’s high interest in developing their own gun dogs that performed a variety of hunting tasks including pointing and flushing nests of fowl and tracking/killing small game like rabbits, foxes and squirrels. However, they dislike water retrieving and are primarily land hunters. Yet they do enjoy recreational swimming as a form of exercise. Their unique versatility earned them the nickname of “the gun dog who can do it all.”
In temperament, the German Shorthaired Pointer is highly affectionate, friendly, and obedient. Aside from their instinctive hunting drive, this is a dog who excels in basic and advanced obedience, agility, and even the high style of the show ring. They are less friendly towards strangers than the Pointer and are best as solitary dogs because of their low tolerance of other dogs. Devoted family pets, they get along well with children and have very high watchfulness towards strangers.
These are handsome brown or red speckled dogs with short coats that require only a brush-down each week. They have a long life span of 12-15 years with few major health concerns. Even with their short coats, they can tolerate fairly cold conditions. Being primarily “outside” dogs, they are rarely seen in apartments and big cities due to their high energy level, their barking propensity and exercise needs. Without access to large yards or rural environments, they will find their own “jobs,” which are usually destructive to furniture, rugs and other household items.
German Shorthaired Pointers are sensitive, gentle, and easily trained. They need social and family interactions as well as hunting and exercise needs. If you’re looking for a devoted companion and versatile field dog, this dog is an excellent choice.
