When Marine Corps Major Brian Dennis first met his adopted dog, their amazing friendship began in Iraq’s Anbar Province. The dog had been severely abused and had been trained as a fighting dog. Maj Dennis named the dog “Nubbs” because his ears had recently been cut off…
Maj Dennis found that Nubbs had also been stabbed with a screwdriver and left to die by his previous owner. He covered the dog’s wounds with antibiotic cream and slept huddled with Nubbs, whom he feared would not survive the night. For four months, Maj Dennis and Nubbs were inseparable best friends.
Then the Marine was ordered to move his squadron 70 miles away, and he was told to leave Nubbs behind. With his heart broken, Maj Dennis obeyed his orders. Two days later, Nubbs suddenly appeared in the Marine’s new camp; he had tracked Maj Dennis through 70 miles of 118-degree desert terrain, chased by wolves all the way. “He looked like he’d been through a war zone,” said the Marine officer. Yes, he had.
Only a few weeks later, Nubbs was again to be abandoned or he would be shot, Maj. Dennis wrote to his mother. “But this dog is going to America,” he wrote. “He’s been through a lifetime of war and cruelty, and tracked our team to find us. He is going to live a good life.”
Maj Dennis began an e-mail campaign that spanned several continents; within only two days, $2,000 had been donated to take Nubbs to safety in Jordan where an American family would care for him until these best friends could be again re-united. Maj Dennis’s mother stated, “I almost feel like Brian is Nubb’s guardian angel, and Nubbs is Brian’s guardian angel.”
Nubbs is healthy and safe in Jordan, waiting for his best friend who has vowed never to leave him again.
