Vick’s Fighting Dogs Get a Second Chance

by Michelle Jones

Hector is a pit bull fighting dog that was rescued from Michael Vick’s illegal dog fighting ring; Vick, a former NFL star, is serving a 23 month prison sentence for maintaining an illegal dog fighting operation, admits that he helped kill six to eight dogs – pit bull fighting dogs. Humane Society investigators rescued Hector and fifty other dogs from Vick’s fighting dog “amusement” operation.

This case is one of the worst pit bull fighting cases on record. Vick’s dogs, and others, were almost daily subjected to vicious, unmerciful dog fights that often resulted in the death of many of the dogs, especially if their owners were not satisfied with their performance and killed them with a shot to the head. These dogs were considered as property, not as animals who could think and feel fear and pain.

Hector should be dead. Either in the fighting ring or killed by his owner, Michael Vick for failing to perform. Many pit bulls seized by the Humane Society must be euthanized because of their breed instinct and by exploitation of these instincts by sadistic pit bull fighters. Instead, Hector and many other pit bulls seized in this incident have been adopted into loving homes.

This is very rare, since most fight-trained pit bulls are euthanized as “unadoptable” because of their intense aggression. According to reports by MSNBC online, many of Vick’s fight-trained pit bulls, when they were released from their aggressive environment, proved to be loving and kind companions for the many people who have adopted them, including Hector!

Dogs are not toys for our amusement. They bleed, they feel pain, and they are afraid. If you have any information about a suspected illegal dog fighting ring in your area, please call the police or your local branch of the Humane Society.

“Dogs are gentle. It’s people who are hard.”
