Tonight’s coverage of the Westminster Dog Show was as exciting as they come! Winners of the Sporting, Toy and Working Groups were named, followed by a history-making Best in Show win. Read more for the results of the most prestigious dog show in America.
The Sporting Group: These are dogs that are best known for their tracking and hunting abilities in the field, allowing their owners to bag their limit of geese, ducks, pheasants and other centuries-old prey. First place went to the Weimaraner, a Westminster long-shot since these dogs are highly trainable but not known for their intelligence. Mostly enjoyed as companion dogs, the winning Weimaraner was clearly a cut above his breed standard. Second place went to the Pointer, a wonderful all-around field “gun dog.”
The Toy Group: Like his standard-sized cousin, first place went to the Toy Poodle, an attractive and fiestly little dog with a “Choose me!” attitude. Since these dogs were bred down for size as companion “lap dogs,” this little guy was everything a toy dog should be! Second place went to the Brussels Griffon, brimming with gusto and affection.
The Working Group: Yet another upset winner; first place went to the Akita, a big, powerful dog with a stubborn, bold and tenacious temperament. This stunning dog beat out the Alaskan Malamute, the Boxer, and the Bullmastiff for the top prize in his group. Akitas are known as a “man’s dog” because of their need for an assertive, firm owner. Second place went to a magnificent Doberman Pinscher, a dog famous for its protection abilities and ease of training.
BEST IN SHOW! This is truly one for the record books! Uno, the rambunctious 15-inch Beagle did it! For the first time in Westminster history, Uno’s all-hound personality, perfect compliance with breed standards and endearing antics in the show ring earned him the Best in Show crown. For those of you who watched both nights of the show, you could have bet the farm on Uno! Beagles are one of the AKC’s most popular breeds; since the Westminster champion is often called “America’s Dog,” Uno fits the title beautifully. First mentioned in 1642 records, Beagles have been a part of our nation’s history. Seeing Uno become the first Beagle to win Best in Show at Westminster was very pleasurable, and the crowd roared its approval!
